Public Works' figures show, the real cost would be greater to Government since more valuable Crown land would be occupied than under the proposed scheme.
The existing Railway Estimates do not provide for either the cost of land acquisition for the station, or for the station buildings. As it had hitherto been assumed that a permanent and expensive Station would be built instead of a temporary one as now proposed, the cost involved by the present proposals are actually less than might have been anticipated under any other scheme. If the cost of Crown Land be included the schemes are estimated by the Director of Public Works as follows:
Scheme 1....................$681,750
Scheme 2....................$1,078,243
Scheme 3....................$1,177,363
Station Buildings.
Until we know how the Management is to be arranged i.e. till the Working Agreement is settled, it is impossible to say exactly what staff will be necessary, but Mr. Barry said that the following was probable:-
1 Chief Engineer and General Manager requiring 2 Office rooms.
1 District Engineer. Nice room, already provided in Chief Resident Engineer's Office.
...requiring 3 office rooms.
1 Traffic Manager
2 Traffic Inspectors
1 Loco Foreman................
1 Railway Auditor................
"already provided as above.
requiring 1 office room.
The total office rooms required in addition to the existing building would therefore be six. The Director of Public Works thought a temporary building to the East of the Water Police Station (on Crown Land) would be the cheapest
